MEXICO: Co-creating strategies to strengthen the autonomy of an indigenous community in Campeche, Mexico. Action Lab Mexico
The village of El 20 has been at the core of ALM since 2012. This year, the project focused on addressing issues related to access to water, healthcare and income in a way that honors local traditions in collaboration with Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), Universidad Modelo and NGO Design Your Action (DYA). The outcomes of the project included a water strategy document, suggestions for sales of honey products and architectural designs for a community complex.

What is ALM?
ALM focuses on the community called “El 20 de Noviembre”, located in Calakmul, Campeche, Mexico. A wide range of disciplines, from Engineering, Science, Art, Design, Business, and Humanities and Social Sciences collaborate with the aim of decreasing social injustice whilst raising awareness of cultural values and about the environmental sustainability of the community.
BHUTAN: Raising awareness on landslide susceptibility in Dewathang Gewog, Samdrup Jongkhar of Bhutan. Project Mapit, PBL South Asia
In this second edition of PBL South Asia Bhutan collaboration, Aalto’s team worked with students from Jigme Namgyel Engineering College (JNEC), Royal University of Bhutan to address hazard susceptibility in Dewathang Gewog in Samdrup Jongkhar district, an area vulnerable to landslides. The main outcome of the collaboration was a visual handbook which aims to raise the locals’ understanding of landslides and hazard preparedness within their neighborhood.

What is PBL South Asia?
In 2019, PBL South Asia collaboration was born and aims to bring students to explore diverse development issues in the Global South. TANZANIA: Creating suggestions for hygiene promotion methods and activities addressing behavior change in Tanzanian refugee camps. Project Zani
Project Zani collaborated with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) hygiene promotion experts across three largest refugee camps within the Kigoma region of Tanzania to develop sustainable hygiene promotion solutions for long-lasting hygiene behavior change within the refugee communities. The final deliverables were based on visual storytelling, emotional drivers and social incentives to prompt behavior change.
